Keyword research is a delicate progress that requires concentration and decision making based on multiple factors. After reaching a decision or conclusion you still feel that the is one last thing to check and this is how SEOQuake comes in to your life.
This tool comes in two versions, one for Firefox and the other for chrome. Both provide it as an extension to the browser. Why I say 2 different versions? Because they are not equally convenient and I had to learn this the hard way.
Below I will cover the tool configuration, usage and a quick bug fix for twitter results
Firefox vs Chrome
This toolbar on Firefox is a mystery, if you happen to disable is from the menus it will disappear completely. So you have to play a bit with configurations until it appears next to the rest of the toolbar buttons. The reason I’m not going into details is – I am biased against Firefox version of this toolbar. If we disregard the accessibility of the configurations and the general looks of it. The battle is still lost to chrome because the results are not available for clipboard downloading as CSV. Instead you get the download version and it is a pain in a butt to say the least.
On chrome you get the same experience – install it from apps and then, immediately you will see the difference. First – no need to restart your browser which is already convenient. Also this works on chromebooks which recently became popular in certain countries.
The major difference is the button that you get in the top right, it is immediately available and it easily turns the tool on and off. the second part is the copy to clipboard option. The reason it is important lies in the way you are going to use this tool. SEO is based on comparison, so you need to tale a lot of tables put them in the same place and then get to a decision. The SEOquake output is not exactly convenient and for separate files you will have to convert multiple time or copy to one file from multiple sources and downloads that have no comprehensible name on them.
In chrome you just format the excel sheet once and then you just paste what ever you find.
So – chrome beats Firefox.
SEOquake twitter results
Out of the box, twitter results are showed for the whole domain rather than specific URL. So you see pages with zero links and PR with millions of tweets, so this is to say the least, confusing 🙂 .
This is what you do,
- Go to preferences > parameters and find Twitter Tweets.
- Choose it and press Edit button
- you will see this:
- change the last 2 lines to
That’s it, you are done. The tool works perfectly again.
The code above represents the flexibility of this tool in terms of fetching data from various web APIs, but, after browsing the possible solutions for a while I came to a conclusion that the default ones are more than enough.
How to use SEOquake
I use this tool as a final step of my keyword research, although it can be used for trial and error keyword analysis, this is still, like shooting in the dark – too much guesswork.
First – configure the toolbar to show only the info that you need – go to preferences > Parameters tab and uncheck the irrelevant boxes (lines – not columns):
- Other search engines – uncheck them. They are just confusing and give no data
- SEMrush Linkdomain – disable them both – they show obscure data that shows big numbers for small things and generally scare you to death
- Uncheck google cache date – irrelevant dates- you are not competing with fresh sites, this means that the ones you found were indexed many times
Second thing to know – this tool sends too many requests to google, make sure you have only 10 results displayed per result (you can do it from your configuration panel in the top right corner of your goolge.com page).
Also, this means that after a 2 or 3 searches, google will panic and make you pass a robot test which would no show on you active search page. Once you see that the google part of the result reruns errors or too many n/a. Open a new tab and brows to google. You will see the the capcha there.
Search for what you need and copy the text from the CSV portion in the top of the search page.
- Open a new excel sheet, paste the results and format the table like this:
- Choose data tab
- press text to columns
- Choose delimited radio button and click next
- Choose semicolon check box
- Click finish
Now you have your results shown properly. Any new data that you post in there will be automatically set to show to the proper way until you close your excel sheet
If you opened the page that you want to test – press the seoquake button and click page info.
here you will see tons of useful information, such as:
- All the search engine parameters
- Keyword density
- phrase density
- Meta keywords and description
- Links in page – internal(same site links) and external (outbound)
Based on this information you can decide – can you beat these on-page SEO factors or not
This is the most important part. One yo are done checking, go with your gut. Even if you are unsure – just do it. Over analyzing is also a great barrier that stands in your way to start working on your new site, so no worries if this tool indicates that all is well – it probably is. If you missed something – it’s OK. Only the result will teach you otherwise.
